The Grass is Greener Where You Water It

I went to the little league park to play a game of family baseball with my husband and kids. As we did, I couldn't help but notice the lush green grass under my feet. Even in the midst of winter, the grass was vibrant with life. When the game ended I walked back to my van to get my drink. I noticed a harsh reality on my way. There was a distinct line between lush and green and dead and dry.  One side of the line teemed with life and the other reflected the bitter truth of winter. To those who maintain these fields, it makes no sense to water off of the field areas. Unfortunately that results in death for the areas they no longer care for. How true is this in our lives, more specifically our marriages? In the winters of life, when we are in the depths of childrearing, we pour our energy out into the areas that most seem important. Then we start to notice the separation and distance growing. In the midst of this winter, we start to feel like we deserve better.  The worst deception in marriage is that you "deserve better". This is the proverbial "grass is greener" scenario. Think with me for a moment. Where do you invest your time, energy, efforts? Do you pour your resources into your work? Your children? Your status? Yourtime friendships? Where do you spend your "self"? This is where you are watering. If the ground you are standing on is dry and parched, have hope, its dormant- not dead. Take time to water where you are. Life is waiting to spring forth, right under your feet.

Just a nugget of sunshine...

While my youngest daughter played chess with her brother on our livingroom floor, she began to get flustered. She being only seven, was not as versed at chess as her elder sibling. In a cry of desperation she called out, "Daddy, I need your help down here." In an instant, I felt the pull of my daughter's heart and I wondered if this is how our Heavenly Father feels for us. I, her mama, was not upset or burdened by her request. Neither was her daddy. Instead we were eager to assess the problem and help her begin to find a solution. I am so thankful tonight, that we have a Heavenly Father who loves us even more than we could and longs to help us sort through this life.

The Wrong Well

For a long time, I found myself very addicted to Facebook. I went there everyday, every hour, and so on looking for some type of affirmation. I went searching for answers, validation, and ultimately my identity. I had to come back often because what I did get was empty. It was not real. Though I could see it, it was lifeless. Though it was tangible in my hands, it didn't really exist. Then it hit me, I was going to the wrong well. Jesus promised if we would come to us He would give us the ever satisfying drink. In Him, I would never be hungry or thirsty to find out who I am. I am taking steps to get up and turn away from this lifeless well. It is hard, sometimes, not to turn back and look for the affirmations of my peers. As good as they may feel, they can and have quickly turned into rejections. In Christ alone, I am always affirmed, loved, and fully known.

My Garden of Weedin

This afternoon I looked out in the yard and saw a bunch of weeds. It seems every time we mow, the weeds just pop back up the next day. Determined to alleviate the problem, I grabbed a dinosaur step stool and an old shoe box. For a while, and by a while I mean five minutes, my children we happy to offer their assistance. Five grand minutes later, I was on my journey alone. My mind became very still and quiet. I was finally alone with my thoughts and the weeds.

I began to recall the book study I am working through, Intimate Issues, and the section where the authors addressed the concept of a mental garden and the weeds and flowers within.  In this book, the weeds are the lies and untruths we believe about ourselves as a person and our outlook on intimacy. As much as I tried, I never had much luck with the mental imagery needed to visualize me pulling the weeds. The book came alive to me today as I sat stooped over these prickly invaders.

My thoughts went back to when my children were helping me. In my life, there have been and will be those who are willing to come alongside me and accompany me in my journey. Then, some will become bored or challenged and walk away. As I worked diligently, I heard my husband approaching my masterpiece. I looked up with pride in my eyes and asked what he thought. He said, "Looks like two weeks more work." He didn't mean to but his discouraged me still. Many won't recognize the progress we have made at eradicating the weeds in our lives. The changes we are making are inside of us. It isn't always evident from the outside.

So, I carried on, determined still that I would show him that I could do two weeks work in one day. As I pulled and ripped, I thought about how it is more desirable to pull out the large weeds. It shows more progress much quicker. The problem with that logic is that there are many smaller weeds still left behind. Though these little weeds take more time and detailed attention, removing them yields a truly clean yard. I noticed that if I pulled on a weed too quickly and carelessly, I broke off the tops and left the roots in the ground. Roots left in the ground grow back to be bigger and stronger weeds. When I took my time, I could twist the deep, large roots and guide them gently to the surface, in tact. I learned how to pull the ever delicate roots, of the very small weeds, up and out in one piece. As I yanked out the roots, I often pulled up more than roots. Rocks, grass, and bugs would come up with the roots. As I remove the lies and other weeds in my spiritual garden, I bring up much more than just weeds and roots. Hurt feelings, forgotten memories, and lost time come back to me as I sort through the good and bad found in my garden.

My back began to ache as I ooched around the yard and my hands looked less than manicured. My back aches still and my fingernails are covered in mud. When we dig in, we need to be prepared that our hands are going to get dirty and its probably going to hurt a bit and maybe even for a while.

What was revealed to me today, as I worked in the yard, was eye-opening. As I battled the milk thistle and the sticker burrs, I was winning a war in my mind and heart. I was able to see the work I had yet to do inside of me. I learned that it was time to get my hands dirty. The time has come to gently weed out the delicate roots, grab hold and twist the deep seated roots, and take my time as I go. As much as I would like to have done two weeks work in one day, it was not what is best for me or my garden. I need to invest the time and do it right completely.

As I finished up a days work, my husband rejoined me. He chuckled at how much time I had given to this activity. He asked with a smirk, "Is this therapeutic?" I grinned from ear to ear, "Yes, in fact it has been."

Satisfied-The New Full

I'm knee deep in a Creflo Dollar sermon when he knocks the wind out of me. He says I need to be "satisfied" with my portion. He is talking in reference to our place in our current lives. My current life is less than satisfying to say the least and this preacher is telling me I need to be satisfied. This challenged me to no end. I even cried. I have walked around, feeling sorry for myself, looking for ways to fill in the missing spots. As I thought about what he said I found the hardest bite to swallow was "satisfied". I immediately began to ponder what did that mean. It means that I FEEL full. It does not mean that I AM full. It does NOT mean that there is no room for more.

What a revelation. The full feeling comes when we take our time, savor every bite, and allow the stomach to send the signal to the brain that we have received what was needed. When we rush about in life, never taking the time to experience it-enjoy it, we never seem to allow our hearts to convey to our minds that we are satisfied. That we have received what we needed.

The next word that I am trying to stomach is "portion". My portion or allotment. This portion may come from seeds I have sown or may just be the season I am in. I am not certain that it is not both. As in the comparison to food, portions are created to help us to be reasonable, rational, not over-indulgent. I serve my children food on plates which have three compartments. I usually put the main course in the larger area, the veggies in the next, and the fruit in the smallest. These compartments speak volumes about my priorities as they do in how I compartmentalize my life-or how I don't. I could rotate and put veggies in the largest, fruits in the medium and main course in the smallest. Either way the food I give them, and myself, is portioned out.

The Lord has given me my portion. Sometimes this portion is Fillet Mignon and sometimes its manna. Either way, if I slow down, savor every bite, I will allow my stomach to send the signal to the brain that I am full. Whether my life is prosperous or barely scraping by, precious moments in my life are still happening. If I slow down, take the time to enjoy each one, my heart will have the ability to send the signal to my brain that I am satisfied.

Psalm 16:5 LORD, you have assigned me my portion and my cup; you have made my lot secure.

Psalm 73:26 My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.

May I bind these words on my heart as I seek You Lord to provide my portion and give thanks to You for the satisfaction it brings!

Welcome!

I have never done a blog before so this will be a new and exciting journey for us all. I hope that God uses this blog to encourage and empower you as a woman and as a wife in this crazy, upside down world. I have walked a very long and rocky path. What I have learned from this path is that God needed me to keep walking so I could share hope, life, and inspiration to women walking behind me. I thank the Lord for every woman who didn't quit so that I could learn from her life. Thank you for reading and sharing in this new season in my journey. Be blessed!!
